5 Cozy Fantasy Reads

What makes fantasy books so interesting?

Escapism, imagination, flexibility, emotional connection... and honestly, a little bit of hope.

I’ve always been a fan of fantasy. I love the adventure, the magic, the worldbuilding, how in just a few minutes I can be transported somewhere completely different. One moment I’m here, and the next I’m walking through mountain ranges or drifting alongside quiet rivers in worlds that don’t exist, but somehow still feel real.

Fantasy has always been my go-to genre, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. And I’m definitely not alone in that. Over the past few decades, fantasy has continued to grow in popularity, even making up around 14% of paperback and 21% of hardcover purchases in some markets.

According to recent publishing data, the genre continues to hold a strong share of the market as reader interest grows. See the full report from BookNet Canada

With newer sub genres trending like romantasy and cozy fantasy gaining traction, it’s only becoming more loved by modern readers.

Now, I’m all for a good romantasy moment, but my personal guilty pleasure will always be cozy fantasy. The kind with a sprinkle of romance, and buckets of feel-good moments, and just enough story to pull you in without overwhelming you.

The kind of book that requires at minimum a comfy chair, blanket, and warm drink, no matter what the weather looks like outside. A book that leaves you with a soft smile from beginning to end.

If you’ve never read a cozy fantasy before, I’d suggest researching a bit before diving in. As much as I love this sub-genre, it’s not for everyone, and that’s okay. But that definitely won’t stop me from recommending it.

So, here are five cozy fantasy books from my personal collection, the ones I always reach for first, and the ones I usually recommend when someone’s just getting started.

Regency Fantasy

·

Soft magic with a wry edge

Half a Soul

by Olivia Atwater

Why It Belongs on This List

Half a Soul is the kind of cozy fantasy that feels a touch strange in the most appealing way. It carries a regency atmosphere, a little old-world charm, and a heroine who moves through social life just out of step with everyone else, which gives the whole novel a gentler, more curious rhythm. It is thoughtful, lightly funny, and emotionally soft without ever feeling flimsy.

Perfect for readers who love

  • readers who love subtle romance and emotional restraint
  • fans of fantasy with period detail and a quieter magical atmosphere
  • anyone seeking a cozy read that feels slightly offbeat and deeply charming

02

Cozy Fantasy

·

A seaside reset with shelves and spells

The Spellshop

by Sarah Beth Durst

Why It Belongs on This List

The Spellshop leans into one of cozy fantasy’s greatest pleasures: the fantasy of beginning again somewhere quieter. Set against a tucked-away seaside backdrop, it follows the delicate work of rebuilding a life at a slower pace. The book never rushes that transformation, which is exactly what makes it feel restorative.

Perfect for readers who love

  • readers who love magical small towns and second-chance beginnings
  • fans of low-stakes fantasy with domestic warmth
  • anyone wanting a book that feels like retreating to the coast for a while

03

Cozy Adventure Fantasy

·

Spark, comfort, and a little rebellion

Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea

by Rebecca Thorne

Why It Belongs on This List

This one carries more motion than some of the other books on the list, but it still protects that cozy core. Two women stepping away from the lives expected of them to build something quieter together gives the story both romantic momentum and emotional ease. It is a good pick for readers who want comfort with a little more spark in it.

Perfect for readers who love

  • readers who love sapphic romance and cozy reinvention stories
  • fans of fantasy that balances warmth with personality
  • anyone who wants their comfort reads to have a bit more energy

04

Cover of Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree

Cozy Fantasy

·

Coffee shop comfort in fantasy form

Legends & Lattes

by Travis Baldree

Why It Belongs on This List

Legends & Lattes has become a modern touchstone for cozy fantasy for good reason. It trades epic scale for everyday satisfaction, following a former adventurer who would rather build a coffee shop than chase another battle. The pleasure comes from watching ordinary things take shape: a room, a menu, a routine, a life.

Perfect for readers who love

  • readers who love low-stakes fantasy and found family
  • anyone who wants a comforting gateway into cozy fantasy
  • fans of books built around everyday rituals rather than high drama

05

Cover of The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

Fantasy

·

Warmhearted wonder with emotional depth

The House in the Cerulean Sea

by TJ Klune

Why It Belongs on This List

The House in the Cerulean Sea brings a little more emotional weight to the list while keeping the same soft landing that makes cozy fantasy so beloved. It begins from a structured, almost bureaucratic place, then gradually opens into something more tender, more communal, and more hopeful. By the end, the warmth feels earned rather than simply decorative.

Perfect for readers who love

  • readers who love found family and emotional healing arcs
  • fans of fantasy with whimsy and a strong human core
  • anyone looking for a cozy read that lingers after the final page
